Dance Off! Camp Begins for 2009

Posted April 9, 2009

The Junior camp commenced on Tuesday 1st April 2009. It was great to see so many schools in the western region participate in our camp and everyone was so enthusiastic and pumped! Although the first day started off with lots and lots of rain.. it didn't stop anyone from dancing, or enjoying themselves!

Our amazing instructor Zac Jaffar, with all his Broadway musicals experience in New York and all over the world started the workshops by creating an amazing routine to "Hot Lunch".  It was here that we started to see how talented the kids were.

Louie George with his wealth of experience in choreography, television shows and performances brought out the razzle dazzle with a sharp Jazz routine to "Circus" by Britney Spears.

A huge but rewarding challenge for the kids was the "Choreographic Workshop" where they were asked to do specific excercises which culminated to them creating their own piece of choreography. We saw some outstanding pieces of work and we were again blown away by the talent of these amazing primary school kids!!!!

Not only were the kids challenged physically but they were challenged mentally by having to remember lots of choreography. Their general knowledge was also tested by a fun night of trivia where all the kids got together in groups with different schools which enabled socialise with each other.

The following day was another awesome day where the kids looked forward the next challenge. This was Rhiannon Villareal's commercial jazz (also jazz, funk, hip hop) to Michael Jackson's remix of "PYT" which demanded the kids to pay attention to the musicality of the routine.  Following this, the kids had a lot fun grilling Rhiannon with a lot of questions about the dance world and working in a televion show as well as being a commercial dancer.

A change of pace and process took place with the Lyrical Jazz workshop by Kim Rhodes, the kids developed a more sensitive and flowing approach to their dance but with a technical edge. This enabled them to appreciate movement through telling a story by applying a number of moves to the lyrics of the song and not necessarily to the beat.

By now the kids have been challenged physically and mentally and are feeling a little tired, but still high in spirits. Their passion for dance still shining through. To harness their energies and to center their focus we started our day with a stretch and meditation workshop where they learnt to be centered and be aware of their own body. This enabled them to tap into their inner strength through focusing on their goals ahead. The stretching excercises rejuvinated their weary bodies from the hard day's work.

The final day of camp started off with a bang and a pop with a fierce, high energy hip hop routine to "Universal Mind Control" before their final showcase to family, friends, VIPs and the Dance Off! team.

What a rewarding and unforgettable junior camp, which enabled to select 9 outstanding dancers to be part of the Dance Off! troupe.
